Tip & tax calculator

Type the price on the menu, pick the city and the kind of service: you get the tax, the tip, the total and each person’s share.

Menu price → what you pay

Service

Tip on the pre-tax total. 20% is the norm in big cities.

Tip

— Receipt —

Subtotal$60.00

Sales tax 8.875%$5.33

Tip 20%$12.00

Total$77.33

Each (2)$38.66

The menu said $60.00; you pay 29% more. Check the bill for an “auto-gratuity” or “service charge” line first: if there is one, the tip is already included.

How it works

In the US, the price on the menu or the shelf excludes sales tax, which is added at the register. The calculator adds the city’s combined rate (or the one you type in), then the tip.

The tip is worked out on the pre-tax amount, the usual practice. The suggested percentages change with the service; check the bill first for an “auto-gratuity” or “service charge”, which means the tip is already included.

The full explanation, with the rules and the examples, is in our guide: Tipping.
