The USA with kids: where to go and how to plan

America may be the easiest country in the world to travel with children: motels with two queen beds, kids’ menus, free refills, playgrounds everywhere and national parks designed for families. The trick is pacing — distances are long — and choosing a few places that kids will remember.

Practical tips

  • Car seats are required by law for young children; rent them with the car or bring your own (airlines usually check them free).
  • Many hotels let children stay free in the parents’ room; many include breakfast.
  • Children under 16 enter national parks free, and non-resident surcharges apply only from 16.
  • Pack snacks and water for every drive: services can be far apart in the West.

Questions travellers ask

What is the best US road trip with kids?

The Grand Circle from Las Vegas at a gentle pace, or San Francisco to San Diego along the coast with time at the beaches and the zoo.

What is a Junior Ranger program?

A free activity booklet available at national park visitor centers. Children complete it, then a ranger swears them in and gives them a badge.
