Seattle sits between saltwater and mountains: on a clear day Mount Rainier hangs over the city like a backdrop. It is a city of fish markets, ferries, coffee and tech, with some of the country’s wildest national parks — Mount Rainier, Olympic, North Cascades — within a few hours’ drive.

Things to do in Seattle

  1. Pike Place Market

Open since 1907 above the waterfront: the fishmongers throwing salmon, flower stalls, the neon “Public Market” sign, the gum wall in Post Alley and the original Starbucks storefront (expect a queue). Go before 10 am for the stalls without the crowds.

  2. Space Needle & Chihuly Garden and Glass

The 1962 World’s Fair tower has a rotating glass floor and an open-air deck. Next door, Dale Chihuly’s glass sculptures fill a garden and a glasshouse. A combined ticket saves money.

  3. 3A ferry to Bainbridge Island

The 35-minute Washington State Ferry from Pier 52 is a cheap sightseeing cruise with the skyline behind you and the Olympic Mountains ahead. Walk-on passengers pay only westbound.

  4. 4Kerry Park

The postcard view of the Space Needle, downtown and — weather permitting — Mount Rainier, from a small park on Queen Anne Hill. Best at sunset.

  5. 5Fremont & Ballard

Quirky Fremont has a troll sculpture under a bridge and a Lenin statue; Ballard, the old Scandinavian fishing district, has breweries and the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks with a salmon ladder (July to September).

  6. 6Museum of Pop Culture

Frank Gehry’s crumpled metal building by the Space Needle, with exhibitions on Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana and the Seattle sound, sci-fi and video games.

Mountains, islands and rain forests

Mount Rainier

2 h south-east

Wildflower meadows at Paradise in July and August, glaciers, and the Skyline Trail. A timed-entry reservation may be needed in summer: check nps.gov before you go.

Olympic National Park

2 h 30 west + ferry

Hurricane Ridge, the Hoh Rain Forest and wild Pacific beaches: give it two nights.

San Juan Islands

1 h 30 + ferry

Orca whale watching from May to September, kayaks, lavender farms.

Vancouver, Canada

3 h north

An easy border crossing with your passport (and an eTA or visa for Canada).

The rain, honestly

Seattle’s reputation is half right: it drizzles often from October to May, under grey skies, but its yearly rainfall is lower than New York’s or Miami’s. July and August are among the driest, sunniest summers in the country, with highs around 77°F (25°C). Bring a waterproof jacket in any other season — locals rarely use umbrellas.

July and August are dry and sunny; June and September are nearly as good and calmer. The rainy season runs from October to May.

Two days for the city, three or four with Mount Rainier and a ferry trip, a week to add Olympic National Park.

Can you see Mount Rainier from Seattle?

On clear days, yes — from Kerry Park, the Space Needle and the ferries. Summer gives you the best odds.

Do you need a car in Seattle?

Not in the city: the Link light rail runs from the airport to downtown and Capitol Hill. Rent one for the national parks.
