3 days in New York for first-timers
- Length
- 3 days
- Base
- Midtown or Lower Manhattan
- Best time
- Apr–Jun · Sep–Nov
- Stops
- 15
Three days in New York is a sprint, so this plan works by neighbourhood: downtown on day one, Midtown and Central Park on day two, the West Side and the Village on day three. Every day ends near a subway line home. It covers the icons a first-timer wants, without spending half the trip in lines.
Hour by hour
Day 1 · Downtown and Brooklyn
8:30
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
First ferry from Battery Park, with tickets bought from the official operator (pedestal or crown tickets sell out). Allow the whole morning.
13:00
9/11 Memorial
The two reflecting pools on the footprints of the towers; the museum below is worth two hours if you have them.
15:00
Wall Street and the Oculus
The Charging Bull, the Stock Exchange, then Calatrava’s white station hall.
17:00
Walk the Brooklyn Bridge
From Manhattan to Brooklyn, with the skyline behind you — about 30–40 minutes at a stroll.
18:30
DUMBO and Brooklyn Bridge Park
The Manhattan Bridge framed between warehouses on Washington Street, sunset on the waterfront, pizza nearby.
Day 2 · Central Park and Midtown
9:00
Central Park
Enter at 59th Street: the Pond, the Mall, Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge, Strawberry Fields.
11:00
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Pick two or three wings — the Egyptian Temple of Dendur, the European paintings, the rooftop in summer.
15:00
Fifth Avenue to Rockefeller Center
Down past the Plaza, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the department store windows.
18:00
Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building
Sunset from 70 floors up. Top of the Rock has the Empire State in the view; the Empire State has the history.
20:00
Broadway
A show in the Theater District; the TKTS booth in Times Square sells same-day discount seats.
Day 3 · West Side and the Village
9:30
The High Line
A park on an old elevated railway, from Hudson Yards south to the Meatpacking District.
11:30
Chelsea Market and the Whitney
Lunch in the market hall; the Whitney Museum of American Art at the south end of the High Line.
14:00
Greenwich Village
Brownstone streets of the West Village, Washington Square Park, the cafés of Bleecker Street.
16:30
SoHo and Little Italy
Cast-iron buildings and shops, then Chinatown for dinner.
21:00
Jazz in the Village
A late set at one of the historic clubs.
If you only have one day
Morning: Brooklyn Bridge walk from Brooklyn into Manhattan, the 9/11 Memorial and a free Staten Island Ferry ride past the Statue of Liberty. Afternoon: the High Line, then Central Park’s southern half. Evening: Times Square and a view from Top of the Rock.

Budget, roughly
No made-up totals: prices move with the season and the day. Here is what costs what, from $ (cheap) to $$$$ (splurge), and where you can save. Our USA budget guide has typical ranges.
Hotel
$$$$
The biggest cost by far. Cheapest in January–February, priciest in December. See our New York hotel picks.
Sights
$$$$
Statue of Liberty, an observation deck and a museum add up; city passes help only if you visit many paying sights.
Broadway
$$$$
Discount booths and lotteries for same-day seats.
Transport
$$$$
Subway fares are capped weekly when you tap the same card or phone.
Food
$$$$
Pizza slices, bagels and food halls are cheap; add sales tax and a tip at sit-down restaurants.
New York in 3 days: your questions
Is 3 days enough for New York?
Enough for the icons and a feel for Manhattan and Brooklyn. Five days lets you slow down and add a second museum, Harlem or Coney Island.
Should I buy a New York city pass?
Only if you plan to visit many paying attractions. With this plan — one observation deck, the Statue and one museum — individual tickets are often similar.
Where should first-timers stay in New York?
Midtown for convenience, or downtown for evenings out. See where to stay, neighbourhood by neighbourhood.
When is the best time to visit New York?
May and September–October. See when to visit New York.
