Yellowstone’s main road is a figure-eight of about 140 miles, and most first-timers lose a day zigzagging across it. Three days is enough if you move through the park in one direction: geysers on day one, the canyon and Hayden Valley on day two, Lamar Valley and Mammoth on day three, sleeping in a different place each night so you never drive back.
Hour by hour
Day 1 · Geysers
7:00
Grand Prismatic from above
From the Fairy Falls trailhead, a short climb to the overlook above Grand Prismatic Spring before the parking lot fills. Morning steam can hide the colors on cold days — come back late afternoon if so.
9:30
Midway Geyser Basin boardwalk
Walk right past Grand Prismatic and Excelsior Geyser’s steaming crater.
11:00
Old Faithful
Check the predicted eruption time at the visitor center or in the NPS app, then watch from the benches or the Old Faithful Inn’s balcony.
13:00
Upper Geyser Basin loop
Lunch, then the boardwalks to Morning Glory Pool, Castle and Grand Geyser: the densest collection of geysers on Earth.
17:00
Firehole River and Biscuit Basin
Quieter boardwalks on the way back; bison graze along the Firehole in the evening.
Sleep: Old Faithful or West Yellowstone
Day 2 · Norris, the canyon and Hayden Valley
8:00
Norris Geyser Basin
The hottest, most acidic basin: Porcelain Basin’s milky pools and Steamboat, the world’s tallest active geyser, which erupts unpredictably.
11:00
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
Artist Point on the South Rim for the classic view of the Lower Falls, then the Brink of the Lower Falls trail down to the lip of the waterfall.
14:00
Hayden Valley
Drive south slowly: bison herds, elk, sometimes grizzlies and wolves. Use the pull-outs, never stop in the road.
16:30
Mud Volcano and Yellowstone Lake
The bubbling Dragon’s Mouth Spring, then the lakeshore at Fishing Bridge.
19:30
Back to Hayden at dusk
The best wildlife hour. Bring binoculars.
Sleep: Canyon Village
Day 3 · Lamar Valley and Mammoth
5:30
Lamar Valley at dawn
Over Dunraven Pass to Tower and into Lamar, the “Serengeti of North America”: wolves (look for the people with spotting scopes), bison, pronghorn.
9:30
Tower Fall
A quick stop on the way back west.
11:30
Mammoth Hot Springs
The travertine terraces on boardwalks, elk lounging on the lawns of the old Fort Yellowstone.
14:30
The Roosevelt Arch
Out through the North Entrance at Gardiner, under the stone arch inscribed “For the benefit and enjoyment of the people”.
Sleep: Gardiner, or drive on to Bozeman for a flight
If you only have one day
Stay in the south-west loop: Grand Prismatic overlook at 7 am, Midway Basin, Old Faithful and the Upper Geyser Basin, then drive to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone for Artist Point at the end of the afternoon, and Hayden Valley at dusk. It is a long day — about 100 miles of slow park road.

Park cafeterias are convenient but pricey; buy picnic supplies in West Yellowstone.
