Bryce is not really a canyon but a series of amphitheaters on the edge of a plateau, filled with thousands of hoodoos — thin spires of orange, pink and white limestone sculpted by frost. It is smaller than its neighbors and easy to see in a day, which is exactly why you should stay overnight: sunrise lights the hoodoos like embers, and the night sky is one of the darkest in the country.

Best things to do in Bryce Canyon

  1. Navajo Loop & Queens Garden

The best short hike in any national park. Start at Sunset Point, descend through the narrow slot of Wall Street between towering hoodoos, cross the forest floor to Queens Garden and climb back up to Sunrise Point. About 3 miles, 600 ft of climbing.

Do it in that direction — down the steep Wall Street switchbacks, up the gentler Queens Garden side.

  2. Sunrise at Bryce Amphitheater

The amphitheater faces east: from Sunrise, Sunset, Inspiration or Bryce Point, the first light turns the hoodoos from grey to orange in minutes. Bring a warm layer — mornings are cold even in July.

  3. 3The scenic drive to Rainbow Point

18 miles south along the plateau to 9,115 feet, with 13 viewpoints. Drive to the end first and stop at the viewpoints on the way back, so they are all on your right. Natural Bridge and Agua Canyon are the highlights.

  4. 4Peekaboo Loop & Fairyland

For a longer day: the Peekaboo Loop (5.5 miles) winds deeper into the hoodoos; the Fairyland Loop (8 miles) is quieter and more varied.

  5. 5Night sky programs

Bryce is an International Dark Sky Park: on a moonless night you can see 7,500 stars. Rangers run astronomy programs and full-moon hikes in summer, and an astronomy festival every June.

  6. Scenic Byway 12

One of America’s great drives continues east from Bryce through Red Canyon’s arches, the slot canyons of Escalante and the “Hogback”, a narrow ridge with drops on both sides, to Capitol Reef.

When to go

At 8,000 ft and above, Bryce is 20°F cooler than Zion. Summer highs sit around 80°F (27°C) with afternoon thunderstorms; spring and fall have cold mornings. Winter brings snow on the orange hoodoos — magical, with snowshoes and the road open to the main viewpoints. Nights below freezing are common from October to May.

Bryce Canyon: your questions

How much time do you need in Bryce Canyon?

Half a day covers the main viewpoints and the Navajo Loop. Stay one night to add sunrise and the night sky.

Is Bryce Canyon or Zion better?

They are different: Zion is a deep canyon seen from below, Bryce a field of hoodoos seen from above. They are 1 h 45 apart, so do both.

Is Bryce Canyon open in winter?

Yes. The main viewpoints are plowed, and the hoodoos under snow are spectacular. Some trails close or need traction devices.

What is the best viewpoint at Bryce Canyon?

Bryce Point for the full amphitheater, Sunset Point for the Thor’s Hammer hoodoo, Inspiration Point for the layers of spires.
