In the far west of Texas, a wall of pale limestone rises abruptly from the desert: El Capitan, the prow of an ancient marine reef that grew in a tropical sea some 260 million years ago. Behind it stands Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas. Guadalupe Mountains has no scenic drive and few facilities — it is a hiker’s park, and one of the least visited in the country.
Best things to do in Guadalupe Mtns
Guadalupe Peak
The summit of Texas, at 8,751 feet, with a steel pyramid on top and a view over El Capitan and the salt flats. A strenuous round trip of about 8.4 miles and 3,000 feet of climbing from Pine Springs: start early, and turn back in high wind.
2McKittrick Canyon
A desert canyon hiding a spring-fed stream and bigtooth maples that turn red and orange in autumn. Walk to Pratt Cabin or further to the Grotto. The canyon gate keeps day-use hours.
3Devil’s Hall
A moderate hike up a rocky wash to a natural staircase and a narrow, high-walled “hallway” of layered limestone.
4El Capitan from US-62/180
The cliff you see on every photo: best at sunrise or sunset from the highway pull-outs west of Pine Springs.
5Salt Basin Dunes
On the remote west side, white gypsum and quartz dunes beneath the mountains, reached by a long drive on rough roads.
Why go: Texas’ secret mountain park
Few people associate Texas with mountains, and fewer make the trip: Guadalupe Mountains is far from any big city and has no road through it. It rewards hikers with a summit, a hidden canyon and big desert silence — and it sits right next to Carlsbad Caverns, so one trip covers two very different parks. White Sands is a few hours further west.
