Imagine a snowfield in the desert that never melts: White Sands is the largest field of gypsum dunes on Earth, glowing white under a deep blue sky between two mountain ranges in southern New Mexico. It became a national park only in 2019, so many travellers still drive past on their way between Texas and Arizona. Stop: you can walk barefoot on cool sand at noon, sled down the dunes, and watch the whole landscape turn pink at sunset.
Best things to do in White Sands
Dunes Drive
The only road in: 8 miles from the visitor center into the heart of the dunefield, the last stretch on hard-packed gypsum that looks exactly like a snowy road. Picnic shelters with space-age roofs stand among the dunes.
2Sledding on the dunes
The visitor-center shop sells plastic saucers; pick a steep dune face without plants at the bottom. Waxing the sled helps. It is the most fun you can have in a national park with your clothes on.
3Interdune Boardwalk and Dune Life Trail
An easy boardwalk of about 0.4 miles through the dune edge, with signs on how plants and animals survive here; the Dune Life loop goes a little further into the sand.
4Alkali Flat Trail
The serious hike: about 5 miles over the dunes, following marker posts, to the edge of the dry lakebed that produced the gypsum. No shade, no water, and easy to get lost if wind erases your tracks — go early, never in the afternoon heat.
Do not start any backcountry hike when the temperature is above about 85°F (29°C): the park has had heat deaths on this trail.
5Sunset and full-moon nights
The white sand reflects every color of the sky. Check the closing time — the drive closes after sunset — and the park’s calendar for occasional full-moon programs.
Why go: the park nobody stops at
White Sands sits off Interstate 10 and away from the big national-park circuits, which is exactly why it feels so special: you can find a dune of your own a few minutes from the car. It is also one of the most child-friendly parks in the country — sledding beats any viewpoint for an eight-year-old — and an easy stop on a road trip between Texas and Arizona.

Getting there, and the missile-range closures
The park entrance is on US-70 between Las Cruces (about 50 minutes) and Alamogordo (about 20 minutes). It is surrounded by the White Sands Missile Range: US-70 and the park road can close for an hour or two during tests. Check the park’s alerts before you drive.
When to go
October to April has mild days and cold nights. Summer is hot but bearable at sunrise and sunset, when the park is at its most beautiful. March and April are the windy months. Winter mornings can be below freezing.
Where to stay in White Sands
There is no lodging in the park, only a handful of backcountry campsites reached on foot (permit required). Sleep in the two nearby towns.

Hotels in Las Cruces partner linkWhite Sands: your questions
Can you sled at White Sands?
Yes, and it is the highlight for most visitors. Buy or bring a plastic saucer and use dunes away from the road and vegetation.
How much time do you need at White Sands?
Half a day covers Dunes Drive, a short walk and sledding. Stay until sunset if you can.
Is White Sands worth it?
Yes: there is no landscape like it in the United States, and it is a short detour off I-10 or US-70.
Is the sand hot at White Sands?
Gypsum reflects sunlight, so the surface stays cooler than ordinary sand; the air and the glare are another matter in summer.
