Where to stay in the USA: hotels, motels, lodges

American accommodation follows the road. In cities, location decides everything: you want to walk to the sights and a subway station. On road trips, motels and chain hotels at the edge of town are clean, cheap and have parking. In the national parks, historic lodges inside the park are the dream — and book up to 13 months ahead.

Sleeping in the national parks

The most sought-after — El Tovar at the Grand Canyon, the Old Faithful Inn, the Ahwahnee at Yosemite, Many Glacier Hotel — sell out within days for summer. If you miss them, check back for cancellations in the weeks before your trip, or stay in the gateway town: our park guides list the best ones.
