Two weeks is the classic length for a first American road trip — the Grand Circle, the West Coast, New England in the fall. This checklist follows the timeline: what to book first, what to sort out a month before, what to check when you pick up the car. Tick as you go: it is saved in this browser, and prints cleanly.

Checklist questions
How far ahead should I book a USA road trip?
Three to six months for flights, the car and the nights near popular parks; earlier for summer and fall foliage season.
How many miles can you drive in two weeks?
Comfortably 1,500 to 2,500 miles. Beyond that you spend more time driving than seeing.
Do I need an International Driving Permit in the USA?
Rules vary by state and by rental company. It is recommended if your licence is not in English, and it is cheap to get at home.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, in this browser only (localStorage). Nothing is sent to us. Use Reset to start again.
