San Francisco is small enough to see properly in three days and hilly enough to make you earn it. This plan does the waterfront and the old neighbourhoods on day one, the Golden Gate on day two — on a bike if you dare — and the redwoods and the Mission on day three, with a sunset from the top of the city.

Hour by hour

Day 1 · The waterfront and the old city

  1. 8:30

    Ferry Building

Coffee and pastries in the market hall (farmers’ market on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays).

  2. 10:00

    Alcatraz

The boat from Pier 33 and the excellent audio tour of the cellhouse; about 3 hours in total. Book with the official operator weeks ahead.

  3. 14:00

    North Beach

Lunch in the Italian quarter, City Lights bookstore, then up the steps to Coit Tower.

  4. 16:30

    Chinatown

Grant Avenue’s lanterns and Stockton Street’s markets, the oldest Chinatown in North America.

  5. 18:30

    Cable car

The Powell–Hyde line over Russian Hill to Fisherman’s Wharf, standing on the running board.

Day 2 · The Golden Gate

  1. 9:00

Crissy Field and the Palace of Fine Arts

Rent bikes in the Marina and ride along the bay.

  2. 10:30

    Across the Golden Gate Bridge

About 1.7 miles over the water, often in the fog, then downhill to Sausalito.

  3. 13:00

    Sausalito

Lunch on the waterfront and the houseboats, then the ferry back to the city with your bike.

  4. 16:00

Golden Gate Park and the Haight

The Japanese Tea Garden and the conservatory, then Haight-Ashbury’s vintage shops.

  5. Sunset

    Ocean Beach

The Pacific at the western end of the park.

Day 3 · Redwoods and the Mission

  1. 8:30

    Muir Woods

Old-growth coast redwoods 40 minutes north. Parking or shuttle reservations are required — book before you go.

  2. 13:00

    The Mission

A burrito on 24th or Valencia Street, the murals of Balmy and Clarion alleys, Mission Dolores.

  3. 15:30

    Dolores Park and the Castro

The city’s favourite lawn, with the skyline view, then the rainbow crossings of the Castro.

  4. Sunset

    Twin Peaks

The whole city and the bay from the top.

If you only have one day

Ferry Building at 9, a cable car to North Beach and Chinatown, lunch, then a taxi or bus to Crissy Field and a walk onto the Golden Gate Bridge. Sunset from Twin Peaks or the Marin Headlands. Alcatraz needs half a day: swap it in only if you booked.

Where to sleep

Budget, roughly

No made-up totals: prices move with the season and the day. Here is what costs what, from $ (cheap) to $$$$ (splurge), and where you can save. Our USA budget guide has typical ranges.

  • Hotel

    $$$$

San Francisco hotels are expensive, and parking adds a lot: skip the car until you leave the city. See our hotel picks.

  • Alcatraz

    $$$$

The main paid sight; book with the official operator only.

  • Transport

    $$$$

Muni buses and streetcars are cheap; cable cars cost more per ride; a day pass helps.

  • Bike rental

    $$$$

Half a day, plus the ferry back from Sausalito.

  • Food

    $$$$

Burritos and dim sum are cheap; dinner downtown is not.

San Francisco in 3 days: your questions

Is 3 days enough for San Francisco?

Yes for the city and Muir Woods. Add a day for Napa or Sonoma, or start a Highway 1 road trip.

Do you need a car in San Francisco?

No — it is a burden with parking costs and break-ins. Pick it up the day you leave.

How far ahead should I book Alcatraz?

Several weeks in summer and on holidays. Only buy from the official operator linked from the National Park Service.

What is the best time to visit San Francisco?

September and October: the warmest, clearest weeks. Summer is often foggy and cool.
