Why we picked it

What convinced us is the sense of place: an adobe bungalow with a fireplace at the edge of the Oasis of Mara, a restaurant on site and the park’s North Entrance five minutes away. We would book it to disconnect on purpose, with the continental breakfast before an early hike, a picnic lunch ordered the night before and the stars from the patio after dinner.

Why we picked it

What convinced us is the character for the price: a 1949 hacienda-style motel laid out around a desert courtyard and pool, where every room opens onto its own patio and rooms are named after Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and Donovan. We would book it for a night or two near the West Entrance, with coffee in the courtyard before Hidden Valley and an evening by the fire pit.

Best for

  • Music fans
  • Budget road trippers
  • Small groups
  • Room 8, the Gram Parsons Room, still has the mirror and picture that hung there in 1973

Hotels in Joshua Tree: your questions

Where should I stay near Joshua Tree for a first visit?

In Joshua Tree village for the West Entrance, Hidden Valley and Keys View, or in Twentynine Palms for the North Entrance and the Oasis Visitor Center. The park itself has only campgrounds. Read our Joshua Tree travel guide

How far ahead should I book a hotel near Joshua Tree?

Both inns are small, so book well ahead for weekends from October to April and for spring break, when 29 Palms Inn applies a 14-day cancellation policy. Use the See prices button of each hotel for live availability.

When is the best time to visit Joshua Tree?

October to April. Wildflowers and cactus blooms peak from February to April; summer days often pass 100°F (38°C), and winter nights can drop below freezing. When to visit Joshua Tree

Yes. Joshua Tree charges $30 per private vehicle for seven days, and there is no surcharge for non-US residents in this park. No entry reservation is needed.
